SUPPORTING THE DEC UKRAINE HUMANITARIAN APPEAL

Like all of us the war in Ukraine fills me with disbelief and an overriding sense of helplessness. The national bird of Ukraine is the White Stork , associated with the arrival and joy of new life. The national flower is the sunflower which representing warmth and the power of the sun. I posted an illustration on instagram and had the idea of publishing a greeting card enclosing a small envelope of five sunflower seeds for people to grow in their gardens as a symbol of hope and remembrance whilst attempting to raise more funds for the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. Seeds are symbolic of new growth and vulnerability as they are scattered to the winds, each with the potential for new life. To be uprooted is something we struggle to comprehend. My aim was to show apolitical support and respect for all those suffering in this war, standing tall against aggression and sending out a wish for an end to this war and for peace to return for all. On the one year anniversary of the outbreak of war earlier this year a print of this image was commissioned by the UK Mission Geneva to be presented to the Ukrainian Ambassador. We have raised over £2500 from this card and it will continue to sell until the war is over.

SUPPORTING THE FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE FOUNDATION

The pandemic was an extraordinary time for everyone. One of the most rewarding projects I worked on during lockdown was using this image of a nightingale with rainbow wings to help raise morale amongst our incredible medical staff during the global pandemic. My illustration was seen on instagram and adopted by the fantastic founding medics inside the Nightingale Hospital at the Excel Centre, London. Since then he has travelled far and wide and been used in a variety of ways and he continues to spread his wings of help, love and hope. The charity that I am proud to support is the Florence Nightingale Foundation. In response to  the COVID-19 crisis, the Florence Nightingale Foundation which supports NHS nurses and midwives to provide care and save lives.  This is achieved through building nursing and midwifery leadership capacity and capability. To celebrate the reopening of the O2 arena we rasied over £9,000 following the sale of nightingale merchandise at two concerts by the Gorillaz and Liam Gallagher, who performed exclusively at the O2 for NHS workers and their friends and families. Where will the rainbow nightingale fly next…?
